Grade 7 and 8 history focuses on the past, examining events and issues that have shaped Canada and the world. It's all about the social, political, economic and legal changes in Canada. It includes comparing the experiences and challenges of First Nations, Metis, as well as Inuit people to present day Canadians. This subject consists of a deep analysis of issues during 1713 - 1914, including shifts in the European imperial powers and the effect it had on indigenous communities. Students will also learn about the French colonial activity during the 16th century and how Canada got impacted by the conflicts and changes that occurred during this period. Lessons will also touch upon the impacts of the Indian Act, the residential school systems, the Numbered Treaties and the systematic racism on indigenous people of Canada. Students will examine the internal and external forces that started Confederation and territorial expansion. New immigrants entering Canada, as well as the inequalities they faced will be explored. The centre of attention will mainly be about the concern of people in Canada from the mid - nineteenth century to the beginning of World war 1.
